Use Claude Better
Than 99% of People

The beginner setup guide. Do it once, do it right, never repeat yourself again.

⏱ ~20 minutes 7 sections Copy-paste prompts ADHD + dyslexia friendly
🧠

Designed for ADHD + dyslexic brains. One idea per section. TL;DR at the top of everything. Tick things off as you go. Jump around using the nav — you don't have to read this in order. Use the Aa button (bottom right) to switch to OpenDyslexic font anytime.

1

Settings Setup

Do this first. 5 minutes. Saves hours.
TL;DR

Tell Claude who you are so it stops treating you like a stranger in every single chat.

Step 1 — Write your Custom Instructions

Go to Settings → Profile. Claude reads this before every response. Fill it in once.

📋 Starter template — paste into Settings → Profile
My name is [NAME]. I run/work at [BUSINESS] in the [INDUSTRY] industry. I mainly use Claude for: [content / emails / research / planning]. Tools I use daily: [list them]. Response style: Keep it concise and direct. Bullet points for lists. Push back if my idea has a flaw.

Step 2 — Toggle these on in Capabilities

💡

Coming from ChatGPT? Go to Settings → Memory → Import. Paste the export prompt into ChatGPT to pull your saved context across. Clean it up first — ask ChatGPT to remove anything outdated from the last 3 months — then paste the clean version in.

🔒

Privacy: Don't want your chats used to train Claude's models? Settings → Privacy → toggle it off.

👻

Incognito chats: See the ghost icon when starting a new chat? Nothing from that conversation gets saved to memory or used for training. Good for testing or sensitive topics.

2

Which Model to Use

Three options. Here's the simple version.
TL;DR

Default to Sonnet. Switch to Opus only for coding — it burns your usage limit 3–5× faster.

ModelThink of it as…Best forToken cost
Opus 4.6Technical leadCoding, data analysis, complex reasoning3–5× higher ⚠️
Sonnet 4.6Creative leadWriting, content, emails, strategyStandard ✅
Haiku 4.5Quick-answer toolFast lookups, simple questionsLowest 💨
🤔

Extended Thinking is a toggle in the chat. Turn it on when you want Claude to slow down and reason through something complex — business decisions, multi-step plans, anything that needs real depth.

3

Projects

Custom versions of Claude for different jobs.
TL;DR

Train Claude once for a specific role. Then just use it — no re-explaining every time.

Projects are like different assistants. Your podcast project knows your format. Your email project knows your voice. Your client project knows the brief.

🎙️

Podcast Producer

Format, guests, show notes style

📧

Email Strategist

Writes in your voice, knows your list

📹

YouTube Assistant

Scripts, hooks, titles — your channel style

👩‍💼

Client Project

All context for one client in one place

How to set one up

1
Find the folder icon in the left sidebar

Click Projects → New Project

2
Write your system instructions

Tell Claude its role, how to respond, and what tasks it handles. Specific = better results.

3
Add a knowledge base (optional)

Upload docs, paste text, or connect Google Drive files

4
Start chatting inside the project

Memory builds as you use it. The more chats inside, the smarter it gets.

💡

Coming from ChatGPT? If you've got Custom GPT instructions, paste them straight into the system prompt. Same concept.

⚠️

Heads up: Projects aren't shareable unless you're on a Team plan. They're just for your own workflows.

4

Connectors

Claude inside the apps you already use.
TL;DR

Sign into your apps once and Claude can actually do things inside them — not just talk about them.

Find them under the suitcase icon → Customise → Connectors. No API keys. Just sign in.

📅

Google Calendar

Read your schedule, spot issues, make changes

📁

Google Drive

Access your docs directly in chat

📨

Gmail

Draft and search emails without leaving Claude

💬

Slack

Send messages, post to channels

🗂️

Notion

Read and write to your workspace

🎨

Canva

Generate and search designs from Claude

Permission levels — you're in control

🗓️

Try this right now: Once Google Calendar is connected, type — "Look at my calendar this week. Where can I fit a 2-hour deep work block?" — Watch it analyse your schedule and come back with a real answer.

5

Skills

This is where Claude pulls ahead of everything else.
TL;DR

A skill is a saved workflow. Train it once, use it forever. No more re-explaining what you want.

How a skill works

How to create your first skill

1
Toggle Skill Creator on

Suitcase icon → Customise → Skills → find Skill Creator and switch it on

2
Start a chat and describe what you want

"Create a skill that helps me reply to Instagram DMs in my voice" — or type /skill-creator

3
Answer the interview questions

Claude asks questions to make the skill actually good. Answer honestly.

4
Claude writes it, tests it, saves it

Hit "Copy to your skills" — it lives in your panel ready to use anytime

Good first skills to build

💌

DM Responder

Replies to DMs in your exact voice

Vibe Check

Brutally honest feedback before you post

📝

Content Repurposer

Video → captions, emails, short-form

📩

Client Email Drafter

Enquiries and follow-ups in your voice

💡

Power move: Already done something in Claude that worked brilliantly? Say: "Can we turn what we just did into a skill?" — it packages everything from your conversation automatically.

6

Artefacts

Real shareable things Claude builds for you.
TL;DR

Artefacts are actual documents and pages — not just text in a chat. Share them with a link.

🌐

Interactive HTML pages

Client resource packs, landing pages, tools

📄

Documents

Reports, proposals, SOPs, guides

📊

Charts + dashboards

Visual data from your calendar or analysis

🎮

Interactive tools

Quizzes, calculators, flashcards, checklists

1
Ask Claude to create something

"Create a branded resource pack from this training transcript"

2
It appears in the Artefact panel

To the right of the chat — you can see and interact with it live

3
Hit Publish Artefact

Get a shareable link — works just like sharing a Google Doc

Real example: After every corporate training, Brooke's skill grabs the transcript, pulls out everything covered, and builds a branded interactive resource pack. Client gets a link. Zero extra work.

🖥️

Claude in Chrome: In the sidebar, look for "Get apps and extensions." Add Claude to Excel, PowerPoint, and Chrome — where it can control your browser and take actions in apps you're logged into.

7

Starter Prompts

Copy these and run them today.
TL;DR

Five prompts to get actual value out of Claude in the next 30 minutes.

Teach Claude your writing style

I'm going to give you 3 examples of content I've written. Study the tone, sentence length, vocabulary, and what I do or don't do. Then summarise my writing style so I can use it as a reference. Example 1: [paste something you wrote] Example 2: [paste something you wrote] Example 3: [paste something you wrote]

Fix your calendar (Google Calendar connected)

Look at my Google Calendar for the next two weeks. What are the biggest issues with how I've scheduled my time? Where am I overloaded? Where can I fit a 2-hour deep work block? Give me an action plan to fix it.

Turn your brain dump into a plan

Here's a messy brain dump of everything I need to get done this week. Turn it into a prioritised action plan — urgent vs important, time estimate per task, and flag anything I should delegate or drop. Brain dump: [paste everything in your head]

Draft a reply in your voice

Draft a reply to this message. Warm, direct, and casual — no corporate language. Message: [paste what you received] Context: [one sentence about the situation]

Research without the rabbit hole

I need to understand [topic] well enough to [what you're using it for]. Skip the history. Give me: the 5 things I actually need to know, the most common misconceptions, and 3 questions I should be asking that I'm probably not.
