The beginner setup guide. Do it once, do it right, never repeat yourself in a Claude chat again.
The beginner setup guide. Do it once, do it right, never repeat yourself again.
Designed for ADHD + dyslexic brains. One idea per section. TL;DR at the top of everything. Tick things off as you go. Jump around using the nav — you don't have to read this in order. Use the Aa button (bottom right) to switch to OpenDyslexic font anytime.
Tell Claude who you are so it stops treating you like a stranger in every single chat.
Step 1 — Write your Custom Instructions
Go to Settings → Profile. Claude reads this before every response. Fill it in once.
Step 2 — Toggle these on in Capabilities
Coming from ChatGPT? Go to Settings → Memory → Import. Paste the export prompt into ChatGPT to pull your saved context across. Clean it up first — ask ChatGPT to remove anything outdated from the last 3 months — then paste the clean version in.
Privacy: Don't want your chats used to train Claude's models? Settings → Privacy → toggle it off.
Incognito chats: See the ghost icon when starting a new chat? Nothing from that conversation gets saved to memory or used for training. Good for testing or sensitive topics.
Default to Sonnet. Switch to Opus only for coding — it burns your usage limit 3–5× faster.
| Model | Think of it as… | Best for | Token cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opus 4.6 | Technical lead | Coding, data analysis, complex reasoning | 3–5× higher ⚠️ |
| Sonnet 4.6 | Creative lead | Writing, content, emails, strategy | Standard ✅ |
| Haiku 4.5 | Quick-answer tool | Fast lookups, simple questions | Lowest 💨 |
Extended Thinking is a toggle in the chat. Turn it on when you want Claude to slow down and reason through something complex — business decisions, multi-step plans, anything that needs real depth.
Train Claude once for a specific role. Then just use it — no re-explaining every time.
Projects are like different assistants. Your podcast project knows your format. Your email project knows your voice. Your client project knows the brief.
Format, guests, show notes style
Writes in your voice, knows your list
Scripts, hooks, titles — your channel style
All context for one client in one place
How to set one up
Click Projects → New Project
Tell Claude its role, how to respond, and what tasks it handles. Specific = better results.
Upload docs, paste text, or connect Google Drive files
Memory builds as you use it. The more chats inside, the smarter it gets.
Coming from ChatGPT? If you've got Custom GPT instructions, paste them straight into the system prompt. Same concept.
Heads up: Projects aren't shareable unless you're on a Team plan. They're just for your own workflows.
Sign into your apps once and Claude can actually do things inside them — not just talk about them.
Find them under the suitcase icon → Customise → Connectors. No API keys. Just sign in.

Try this right now: Once Google Calendar is connected, type — "Look at my calendar this week. Where can I fit a 2-hour deep work block?" — Watch it analyse your schedule and come back with a real answer.
A skill is a saved workflow. Train it once, use it forever. No more re-explaining what you want.
How a skill works
How to create your first skill
Suitcase icon → Customise → Skills → find Skill Creator and switch it on
"Create a skill that helps me reply to Instagram DMs in my voice" — or type /skill-creator
Claude asks questions to make the skill actually good. Answer honestly.
Hit "Copy to your skills" — it lives in your panel ready to use anytime
Good first skills to build
Replies to DMs in your exact voice
Brutally honest feedback before you post
Video → captions, emails, short-form
Enquiries and follow-ups in your voice
Power move: Already done something in Claude that worked brilliantly? Say: "Can we turn what we just did into a skill?" — it packages everything from your conversation automatically.
Artefacts are actual documents and pages — not just text in a chat. Share them with a link.
Client resource packs, landing pages, tools
Reports, proposals, SOPs, guides
Visual data from your calendar or analysis
Quizzes, calculators, flashcards, checklists
"Create a branded resource pack from this training transcript"
To the right of the chat — you can see and interact with it live
Get a shareable link — works just like sharing a Google Doc
Real example: After every corporate training, Brooke's skill grabs the transcript, pulls out everything covered, and builds a branded interactive resource pack. Client gets a link. Zero extra work.
Claude in Chrome: In the sidebar, look for "Get apps and extensions." Add Claude to Excel, PowerPoint, and Chrome — where it can control your browser and take actions in apps you're logged into.
